Dr. Ravi Gupta is a well known and experienced Senior Heart Specialist from Jaipur in Rajasthan. He is currently associated with Soni Hospital as Director. In addition to this, he is also available for his expert advice at Kailash Hospital, and Ravi Gupta Heart Clinic. His special interest areas are non surgical treatment (Ballooning and Angioplasty) of Arteries of Neck, Kidney and Lower Limbs, and Varicose Veins. Till date, he has performed more than 5000 coronary angioplasties including complex cases like left main, bifurcation lesions, and chronic total occlusions.
Dr. Gupta has completed MBBS from SMS Medical College in Jaipur followed by MD in General Medicine from RNT Medical College and DNB in Cardiology from Escorts Heart Institute & Research Center, New Delhi.
Dr. Gupta's past experience includes working at some reputed hospitals holding prestigious positions such as:
1. Senior Resident: Escorts Heart Institute & Research Center, New Delhi- Dr. Gupta was responsible for
- Evaluation and diagnostic work up of patients in the emergency and attending outdoor patients.
- Managing patients in Heart Command Centre (ICCU) of various cardiac ailments requiring invasive hemodynamic monitoring (Arterial BP, CVP/PAP, Swan Ganz Catheterizations, Cardiac output monitoring) and transvenous pacing.
- Performing all kinds of specialized diagnostic work up of cardiac patients (2D echocardiography, Carotid, Renal and peripheral Doppler, Dobutamine Stress echo, Nuclear Imaging, various new techniques like 3D Echo, Tissue Doppler, Intima Media thickness, Flow mediated dilatation).
- Transport of critically ill patients from various hospitals all over North India requiring advanced cardiac life support in a well equipped ambulance.
- Community Outreach Programme – Attending various free heart evaluation camps at various places in North India.
- Participation in Journal Club, Seminars and Case Presentation.
2. Attending Cardiologist: Escorts Heart Institute & Research Centre, New Delhi- Dr. Gupta performed more than 1500 independent coronary angiographies which included complicated and severe triple vessel disease, post CABG patients and poor LVEF patients. He was also part of a team which performed various other procedures like diagnostic catheterisation in paediatric patients, Balloon Mitral Valvotomy, ASD/ VSD/ PDA device closure, MAPCA coil occlusions, COA stenting, and IABP insertion.
3.Consultant Cardiologist: Interventional Cardiology at Escorts Heart Institute and research Center, New Delhi- Dr. Gupta performed additional 1000 independent coronary angiographies (including the sickest patients like on IABP, on ventilator, raised PA pressures, low EF patients, post- CABG). He had performed over 200 angioplasties independently and done quite a few cases of primary angioplasties independently. He also operated in supervision as a primary/secondary operator. A large number of these angioplasties were complex procedures like bifurcation lesions, chronic total occlusions, and calcified lesions requiring rotablation. He had done a couple of non coronary procedures like septal ablations, IVC filter implantation, IABP insertion, pace maker implantations, BMV and independent ASD device closure, BPV and BAV procedures although the numbers are not large. As an independent Consultant, he got an experience of managing sick patients of all sorts including cardiac and non-cardiac issues in emergency and heart command center. He had an independent admission rights at EHIRC, and managed his own patients (4-6 new patients every week and at a time, 8-10 admitted patients) both conservatively as well as interventional procedures, whenever required. Through hospital's community outreach programme, along with his team of doctors, nursing staff, echo technicians, Dr. Gupta did several free heart checkup camps in Delhi as well as remote areas in India. Patient education and awareness about heart diseases and CME (with local physicians, regarding cardiac topics of their interest and importance) were integral part of these camps.
4. Consultant & Head of Department of Interventional Cardiology: Apollo Modi Hospital, Kota- Dr. Gupta played an integral part in establishing the Department of Cardiology in this hospital and performed around 150 angiographies and 50 angioplasties in five month duration. As a part of community outreach programme, he did several free heart checkup camps in remote areas of Rajasthan and organized several CMEs.
5. Head of department of Cardiology: Sarvodaya Hospital and Research Center, Faridabad- He established the department of Interventional Cardiology in this hospital and performed 40-45 procedures every month, including 10 –15 angioplasties. Along with his coronary work, he also performed a couple of carotid, renal and Peripheral interventions. Trans-radial procedures were also performed frequently at this center. He took care of non-invasive department and performed about 60-65 trans-thoracic echos, 10-15 stress tests, a couple of trans-esophageal echos per month.
6. Consultant Interventional Cardiologist: Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad- Dr Gupta performed around 100 procedures per month which included on an average 20-25 coronary angioplasties. He was involved in pacemaker implantations (single and double chamber both). However, he was more involved in trans radial procedures, which included all types of coronary angioplasties including primary angioplasties. First trans radial primary angioplasty of the city was performed by Dr. Gupta. He conducted 60 % of his procedures by radial route. In addition to coronary interventions, he was also involved in peripheral interventions as well including renal, carotid, iliac and popliteal angioplasties and procedures like bronchial artery embolisation and renal artery embolisation.
7. Senior Consultant, Cardiology at EHCC
He has been part of various studies which can be listed as below
- ARISE study (Assessment of Rheumatic heart disease in Indian School children by Echgocardiography): Population examined was 15,000 school children. It is a community based study, in which team had gone in several villages and performed echocardiographies of all school going children (irrespective of symptomatic status ) to see the prevalence of RF/RHD as well as congenital heart diseases. It is an ambitious and the largest community based echo study in world. Being an important member of a team of this project, he himself did about 8000 echocardiograms. Team is in a process of compilation of the data.
- Pattern of coronary calcification, signal loss on MRI and lesion on conventional coronary angiograms were compared in collaboration with department of nuclear medicine. Dr. Gupta, being the principal investigator, presented this data in an international conference ICCAD at Florence in Italy in 2003.
- At present, Dr. Gupta is involved in a study aimed at prevalance and pattern of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in patients with CAD. This is a prospective study, in which team has to do an ankle –brachial index (ABI) of all patients scheduled for coronary angiograms, irrespective of symptoms suggestive of PAD. Those with abnormal ABI undergo peripheral angio along with coronary angiograms.
- Dr. Gupta has recently completed a study aimed to see prevalence of PAD in asymptomatic executives. In this study, team did an ABI of all executives came for routine comprehensive cardiac check-up and those with abnormal ABI were followed by peripheral arterial Doppler and if that is also abnormal, with peripheral angiogram. This is in process of compilation.
